This past April, Sony released a PS5 firmware update with Variable Refresh Rate support. Players with a compatible HDMI 2.1 display may take advantage of reduced frame drops and input lag with VRR enabled. Users without an HDMI 2.1 display may still use VRR, but visual bugs may occur due to incompatibility. A number of high-profile PS5 games currently support VRR, such as Call of Duty: Vanguard, Destiny 2, DIRT 5, and Marvel’s Spider-Man Remastered. Many more games are expected to support VRR throughout the PS5’s lifecycle.

The latest PS5 firmware update, version 22.01-05.50.00, improves system performance and adds settings for the console’s auto low latency mode (ALLM). ALLM allows for a smooth, lag-free experience while playing games at a high frame rate. The feature is often compared to VRR for its role in reducing input lag. However, all PS5 players may utilize ALLM without compatibility issues and the need for an HDMI 2.1 display.

The ALLM settings may be accessed by reaching the “Screen and Video” menu under PS5 Settings. After reaching the menu, the settings option “Video Output” is present, containing the ALLM settings. Players may choose the Automatic option to allow the display to automatically enable when a game is being played. If Off is selected, ALLM will only enable itself when VRR is being used during a play session.

The inclusion of ALLM settings grants players the opportunity to fine-tune their PS5 experience across a multitude of displays and configurations. An expensive HDMI 2.1 display is not needed for ALLM, so players won’t have to immediately upgrade from an HDMI 2.0 display. Sony understands display settings and preferences for users may differ greatly, and ALLM is a compelling compromise. For the best possible gaming experience on PS5, settings like VRR and ALLM are necessary to achieve the desired responsiveness at high frame rates.

Although PS5 firmware update 22.01-05.50.00 doesn’t offer completely new features, Sony will continue rolling out firmware updates to improve the console’s stability and performance. These firmware updates ensure compatibility for upcoming PS5 games, the DualSense controller, new PlayStation Plus offerings, and much more within the PlayStation ecosystem. New PS5 features are expected with major product launches, such as the PlayStation VR 2 headset.

title: “Ps5 Gets New Firmware Update” ShowToc: true date: “2022-12-23” author: “Anthony Robare”

PS5 update version 22.02-06.02.00 is available to download and install around the globe now. The PS5 has seen several firmware updates in an effort to improve functionality and user experience. While few of them have been substantial and the PS5 still remains relatively similar to its launch back in November 2020, this new update does bring some nice quality of life changes to the user interface and a significant change to the way trophies are viewable.

There are two significant improvements in this new update. The first is a change to the Activity Cards that have been a part of the user experience since launch. Before the newest update, a large horizontal list would appear when the activity cards were accessed, which was slightly clunky and took longer than necessary for users to access what they needed. The Activity Card feature was designed to allow players quick access to specific features or locations within games themselves, therefore saving time and avoiding loading screens. Now, all the game’s activities that you are currently playing are listed in a vertical list and are grouped together based on their intended function or game mode. The PS5 activity card feature had previously been underutilized, so hopefully, this new update will give users a better experience.

The second change in this update is focused on visibility and accessibility of the PlayStation Trophy feature, which previously saw an update to the PS5 which allowed players to reveal all hidden trophies in games. Now, when users select the Trophy icon on the interface while a game is open, all the trophies for the game will be displayed in a vertical column. Before the update, players would have to view trophies from the Trophy Tracker menu and then find a different menu to see the trophies for a specific game.

These updates are nice, for sure, but the PS5 still has a ways to go in terms of interface. There are still no available themes and some other features that were available on the PS4. With the rumor that the PS5 will integrate with Discord in the future, it does appear like the PlayStation 5 is on the right track to improve its user experience.
