It’s become rather known that the PS5 has outsold the PS4 with 7.8 million consoles over the same time period of release. At the time, the PS4 sold 7.6 million consoles. Additionally, Sony has recorded an impressive increase of 81% in playtime, compared to what the PS4 produced.

Something to keep in mind with this news is that the COVID-19 pandemic significantly affects the production and shipping of the PS5, meaning the next-gen console could be performing even greater than what Sony currently sees. However, a possible explanation for the PS5’s increase in playtime is backward compatibility. While the PS5 hasn’t seen a significant number of exclusive releases, the ability to play the PS4’s titles with many featuring next-gen upgrades means that players can enjoy these games like never before. This is a feature that didn’t exist on the PS4, despite Sony later adding some games from the older generations.
Another reason is that people are spending more time indoors than they were when the PS4 released. The pandemic has turned people to gaming, with Sony giving games out for the PS5 and PS4 for free to help reduce people’s outings. In the same post-launch period as the PS4, Sony has seen an increase of 11% in PS5 game revenue. Even while shortages are making the next-gen consoles scarce, the PlayStation 5’s future is looking bright.
An increase in sales isn’t all that Sony has reported, though. It was recently confirmed that Sony is developing over 25 PS5 exclusive games at the moment, cementing that the future of the PS5 is bright and strong, but also shows that Sony isn’t afraid of taking risks as more than half of those games are reportedly new IP. Unfortunately, while sale numbers are doing well, for now, Sony could be facing a long-term issue that they don’t have control over with shortages.
Either way, It’ll be interesting to see what comes from the PlayStation 5’s future and what future games fans can look forward to. The release of the PS5 has been increasingly impressive for Sony. Still, time will only tell if this pace in sales will continue, especially since Sony recently confirmed they’d be experiencing delays going into 2022 as well.
