Sony’s marketing strategy with the PS5 has been criticized by some for being too obtuse and tech-heavy, which is understandable given that the most extensive look at the upcoming console has been Cerny’s March presentation. The Road to PS5 video doesn’t provide much insight into the launch lineup or pricing of the PS5, but rather it offers a deep dive into the technical specifications and inner workings of the console. Fans were divided about the subject matter of the presentation, but most agreed that Cerny’s speech was oddly calming and soothing despite the fact that he was discussing solid-state drives and advanced audio technology.

Now, Cerny’s talk has been transformed into something else entirely. The whole 52-minute presentation has been paired with relaxing ambient audio and gorgeous landscape photos in order to create what the video calls “Mary Cerny ASMR.” As Cerny goes on and on about the PS5’s technical specifications, photos of Cerny and the Knack logo periodically float across the screen. The word teraflops appears more than once.

This adaptation of the PS5 tech talk is a part of a popular YouTube trend called ASMR, which stands for autonomous sensory meridian response. ASMR videos employ various sounds, such as whispering into a microphone or crinkling paper, in order to elicit a response from the person watching. Typically, the end result is a tingling sensation, but the trend has expanded to include basically any sort of video with relaxing audio. Most of these videos also involve binaural audio, but this video with Mark Cerny unfortunately does not. That doesn’t stop it from being a strangely meditative experience, however.

Sony has definitely been taking a different route with marketing for the PS5 compared to Microsoft’s constant barrage of news about the Xbox Series X, and this video reflects that perfectly. Even though the drip-feed of PS5 news over the past few months has been slow, it’s great that fans have been able to make the best of the situation and create videos like this one. Hopefully, more PS5 news will come out later this summer, but for now, all people can do is wait. Regardless, Mark Cerny has one of the most calming voices in the entire industry, and it’s about time the man got the recognition he deserves.

The PS5 is planned for release holiday 2020.
