Sony released the PS5 at the end of 2020 as the company’s next-gen answer to Microsoft’s Xbox Series X. Along with dramatically improved hardware compared to the PS4, the console boasts a bold look. While many like the departure from the traditional PlayStation design, some joked that the next-gen machine has a striking resemblance to a wifi router. Despite the already unusual design, one fan wanted to make it even stranger.

In a post on Reddit, a user known as Longjumping-Ad-7645 shared a video of their PS5 sitting on an entertainment console. However, unlike the standard look of the PS5 design, this one had an unusual feature; it contained strips of LED lighting. In the video, the Reddit user revealed that they had placed two strips of LEDs running down the sides of the console. Using a remote, they could change between different lighting patterns. While they could pick from different lighting presets, each option shared one similarity: they were all very bright.
Besides showing off the LED lighting, they posed a question to the community: should they keep the rainbow-colored lighting? With nearly 1,000 upvotes in less than a day, the modified console caught the attention of many members of the PlayStation community on Reddit. Unsurprisingly, many gamers were quick to weigh in with their own opinions.
A few gamers sided with the Longjumping-Ad-7645, commenting that they actually liked the vivid new look of the PS5. In addition to those that wanted to try the setup themselves, other users took a middle-ground approach. “Not for me but if you like it OP you do you,” one person said.
While several people enjoyed the look of the colorful lighting, numerous gamers were more critical of the new look. Many said that they would not want the lights on their consoles, with one even claiming that it looked like a Christmas tree. Besides believing that the additional lighting looked gaudy, others noted more practical issues with the new design. They claimed that the bright flashing lights would be too distracting when playing games on the console. Furthermore, a couple of gamers were concerned that the LED strips could block ventilation.
This is one of many custom designs players have made for their PS5 consoles. Recently, another fan decided to draw Spider-Man on the side of their machine. As more people hopefully begin to have access to these next-gen consoles, it will be interesting to see what other modifications to the standard design fans come up with in the future.
