As complaints quickly mounted on social media, analysis from DownDetector, a website that tracks platform outages, confirmed the service had seen a major spike in problems across the U.S.
In a status update, the Sony-owned company said the ongoing issues appear to have affected PS3 and PS4 consoles, and indicated downtime was tied to the network being overwhelmed by traffic.
“You may have some difficulty launching games, applications or online features. Our engineers are working to resolve the issue as soon as possible, and we thank you for your patience,” it said.
“You may experience somewhat slower or delayed game downloads because we’re working with ISPs to manage download traffic. We believe it’s important to do our part to address internet stability concerns as an unprecedented number of people are staying home and practicing social distancing. We appreciate the support and understanding from our community,” added a statement on its status page.
Officials from PlayStation have not provided an estimated timescale for a full fix. Frustrated gamers have continued to flock to Twitter this morning as the network connectivity problems have persisted, although some users claim issues are beginning to subside. Sony PR has been contacted for comment.
